Malayalee student Aimilin Thomas as a child rights voice in the UN ...

Philadelphia: Congratulations to Aimilin Thomas, a Malayalee student who delivered a child rights speech as the US Representative to the United Nations. Aimil was lauded by many, including MP and Congress leader Shashi Tharoor. Aimil, a high school student, gave the introductory speech at the United Nations Conference on the Rights of the Child. Aimilin Rose Thomas presented the possibility of innovative perspectives at a panel discussion hosted by the United Nations Committee.

Other speakers at the inaugural meeting were the UN Chairman, Associate Director, UNICEF Global Head, and the Secretary - General's Special Representative on Violence against Children. The United Nations Commission on the Rights of the Child (CRC) holds a public debate every two years. This year's conference was on September 16th and 17th. The meeting was attended by children, youth and policy makers. The main event of the conference was the opportunity to speak on a chosen topic related to children's rights. This year's theme was "Children in Special (Need) Care".

The topic of 'children in alternative care' was valuable to Aimil. Her brother Emmanuel Thomas is a child in need of special care due to a rare genetic mutation called 'Cardiophasiocutaneous Syndrome' which affects different parts of the body. The life experiences gained by caring for a brother in need of special care made Aimil a courageous advocate for children's rights. Aimilin made sure to hear the children's voices. Aimilin is an effective member of her school 'Model United Nations' and 'Debate Teams'. ”

While in eighth grade, Aimilin participated in a creative writing college credit program. As a very young student who attended this college-level course alongside English teachers and postgraduate students, the professors were impressed by Aimil's diligence. Aimil, on the other hand, wrote a poem about his brother Emmanuel, based on his special care needs. The beauty of that poem came from a professor at the School of Education at Adolfy University in New York. Pawan Antony was rated as the best in the spotlight. Dr. Aimil was nominated to the CRC's Children's Advisory Team. It is Antony. Following the nomination, Aimilin was selected as one of 30 members from 250 applicants from around the world, representing 19 countries. Aimilin has been a member of the Children's Advisory Team for two years. Thus, as the American representative to the United Nations, Aimilin Thomas was commissioned to deliver a speech on the rights of the child, representing the rights of the child.

Aimilin described her experience working with the UN Committee on the Rights of the Child Advisory Committee: 'It was amazing. I met children from Pakistan, Nepal and other African countries. I think it's been a great experience, serving, discussing and sharing ideas with children all over the world. ”

“The main objective of the UN Committee on the Rights of the Child is to discuss the topic of 'Children in Alternative Care', to compare child care opportunities in different countries, to conduct surveys among children around the world, to identify global speakers from children's organizations, and to provide guidance to the UN Committee on the Rights of the Child. Mikiko Otani is the chair of the UN Advisory Committee on the Rights of the Child. The event, scheduled to take place at the UN World Headquarters in Geneva on September 18, 2020, was held a year later, on September 16, 2021, at the Zoom Meeting, a year after the outbreak of the Kovid-19 epidemic. We can see it on UN Web TV. ” Aimilin said.

“The experience of caring for my brother Emmanuel has inspired me to work towards a better future for children in need of special care; It was such experiences that led me to commit to those mission goals. I want to be a pediatric surgeon and have a great desire to be an advocate for children’s rights. My parents, school, church and my adolescence make me excited to have more experience and learn by doing more, ”Aimilin added.

This past summer, Aimilin did an internship with the research team at the world-renowned Children's Hospital of Philadelphia (CHOP). "I worked with patients and doctors and got used to the atmosphere of paramedics, and I loved the atmosphere that helped them carry out their service life mission," Aimilin said.

Mount St. Joseph Academy High School runs a club led by Aimil for 'Operation Smiley'. It is a non-profit medical service organization. Emil was guided in his service activities by a global charity called Lumen Vite. “I think we are very lucky to live in the United States and have excellent health insurance and wonderful programs for children with special needs. But I want to make it clear that quality care is not available to people with special needs who live in other parts of the world and in the poorer low-income areas of the United States, and that high-quality care should be available to everyone — no matter how much money we make, no matter where we live, ”Aimilin said in a voice of a teenage lawyer.

Aimilin is the daughter of Jose Thomas of Pala (Avimoottil House), Kottayam and Marilyn Augustine of Moolamattom (Kunnakkad House). Jose Thomas works as a math teacher at Springford Area High School. Marilyn Augustine is the Associate Director of Global Compliance at Pharma Major Pfizer Inc. Permanent residence in Philadelphia. "We have always tried to inculcate the values and culture of Kerala in our children," said Jose Thomas.

At this year's conference of the United Nations Commission on the Rights of the Child (CRC), Aimilin's choice of dress to make the opening remarks at that meeting was from an Indian background: "We deliberately chose Indian clothing. We have to show our culture, which has its own value, especially for the UN audience."

Aimil has this to say about Kerala: “I really like Kerala, Kerala helps me to see my whole family and regain my Malayalam language skills. During my visit to Kerala in 2019, I talked about emotional intelligence in some schools and colleges in Kerala. I hope it helps the kids, ”says Aimilin.
